OUSMANE BÁ

born in 1988, Strasbourg, France ; lives and works in Tokyo, Japan

“I paint over and over again to clear my mind, with the goal of becoming one with the paper and the brush. It is only through repetition that my line can approach perfection.”

He is a French visual artist, born and raised in Strasbourg, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from L’Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués. His artistic practice primarily revolves around drawing, painting, and collage. He has always had an interest in Japanese art, which is why he moved to Japan in 2017 to develop his style and technique, immersing himself in a new philosophy and vision of the world. He predominantly works with Japanese mineral pigments and ink, drawing inspiration from calligraphy and Japanese printmaking techniques. He has participated in exhibitions at various Japanese galleries such as Studio Gross, Fukagawa garage, and Trunk Hotel. Most recently, his work was showcased at the Dakar Biennale 2022 and 1:54 New York…

The spontaneity and gestures of bodies are at the core of my artistic practice. He takes the time to represent underrepresented and invisible bodies in art circles, adopting a body positivity lens. Bodies become a vector of motion and movement, symbolizing the beginning of all things. In his exhibition titled “The Idle Dream of the Black Body,” he celebrates black leisure, the ideal dream of black bodies. Black leisure serves as a form of resistance against body control, which always demands productivity and efficiency for capitalism.

Harmony and peace occupy a prominent place in his artistic message. There is an essential spiritual dimension in his art, drawing inspiration from his Fulani background, a traditionally pastoral and nomadic community. It serves as a thoughtful invitation to reflect on movement, our relationships with ourselves and others, and our engagement with nature. Today, he’s taking his work in a new direction, considering himself a nomad between painting and digital drawing, in search of a representation of inner peace.
