b. 1995 in Kaduna, Nigeria; currently lives and works in Suleja, Nigeria
Collins Obijiaku was born in Kaduna, Northern Nigeria and has spent the last twenty years living in Suleja, a small town famous for its proximity to Abuja (the Nigerian Federal capital) and widely recognised as a town with a great pottery tradition.
Obijiaku developed his practice as a self-taught artist and uses an array of materials within his compositions, often mixing oil, acrylic, and charcoal to achieve soft gradients, strong textures, and precise line work. Close, focused observation of his styled portraits holds the viewers gaze in a dizzying embrace. The mesmerising effect induced by concurrent and collinear lines running with no obvious start or end point is deliberate, as the artist sees these lines as representing life’s unpredictable journey.
